Failed Predictions Don't Stop Apocalypse Forecasters

If a group of fundamentalist Christians is right, you won't live more than another nine months. Harold Camping, leader of the ministry Family Radio Worldwide, has concluded after careful study of the Bible that the world will begin to end on May 21, 2011. It will actually take several months for the process to be complete, but Camping is certain that by October it will all be over, and his group is...

30 Reasons Why 2011 Is Going To Be Another Crappy Year For America’s Middle Class

Do you think that 2011 will be a good year for America's middle class? Well, you might not be so optimistic after you read the 30 statistics posted below. The truth is that 2011 is going to be another crappy year for America's middle class, and there is not a whole lot that you or I can do about it. Sadly, what we are facing as a nation is not just a short-term economic downturn. Rather, there are some very serious long-term economic trends that are absolutely ripping apart the U.S. middle class. For example, did you know that even though our population has been growing at a brisk pace we have lost about ten percent of our middle class jobs over the past decade? The vast majority of jobs that have been created have been low paying service jobs. We now have hordes of highly educated young people that are waiting tables and that are welcoming customers to Wal-Mart. Without good paying jobs there is no middle class, but today American corporations are actually creating more jobs overseas than they are inside the United States. This has helped pad the profits of the big corporate fatcats, but it has been devastating for middle class communities across the United States. Every time a factory gets closed down in America and gets set up in some other country instead, it means that the U.S. middle class is shrinking just a little bit more. The new "global economy" has been good for the bottom line of the largest U.S. corporations, it has been great for countries like China and India, but it is absolutely wiping out the U.S. middle class.

If you still have a good paying middle class job you should be very thankful. The total number of those jobs is rapidly decreasing. Millions of those that have lost their jobs over the last several years have been forced to take lower paying jobs or even part-time jobs in an attempt to fill the void. Millions of others have not been able to find a job at all.

Meanwhile, the price of everything is going up. Have you been to the supermarket lately? The price of food is going up substantially. Many analysts are already talking about $5 a gallon gasoline in 2010. Utility bills are going through the roof. Health care premiums are soaring. Many state and local governments are seriously hiking up taxes and fees.

Tens of millions of American families are going to be forced to make what they do have stretch even farther in 2011. But for many American families the breaking point has already been reached. An all-time record number of Americans is on food stamps. An all-time record number of Americans is living below the poverty line. Personal bankruptcies and mortgage defaults continue to hover around record levels.

The U.S. economy is shaking like a leaf, and the people that are feeling it the most are the hard working American families that just want to make an honest living, pay the mortgage and feed their families.

Unfortunately, 2011 isn't going to be any easier for those families. As a nation we continue to pursue the exact same economic policies that have allowed these horrible long-term economic trends to develop. Things are not going to change until our country starts moving in a fundamentally different direction.

The following are 30 reasons why 2011 is going to be another crappy year for America's middle class....

#1 We are bleeding middle class jobs at a pace that is staggering. Since the year 2000, the United States has lost 10% of its middle class jobs. In the year 2000 there were about 72 million middle class jobs in the United States but today there are only about 65 million middle class jobs.

#2 In particular, the United States is absolutely hemorrhaging manufacturing jobs. Back in 1970, 25 percent of all jobs in the United States were manufacturing jobs. Today, only 9 percent of the jobs in the United States are manufacturing jobs.

#3 The decline of manufacturing in America has only accelerated over the past decade. The United States has lost a staggering 32 percent of its manufacturing jobs since the year 2000.

#4 Deindustrialization is creating ghost towns in some areas of the United States. Even some of America's biggest cities are now only a shadow of what they used to be. Since 1950, the population of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania has declined by more than 50 percent. In Dayton, Ohio 18.9 percent of all houses now stand empty.

#5 We have literally seen tens of thousands of American factories close down permanently over the past decade. Since 2001, over 42,000 U.S. factories have closed down for good.

#6 U.S. companies now create more jobs overseas than they do in the United States. Over the past year, American companies have created 1.4 million jobs overseas but less than a million jobs here at home.

#7 When Americans lose their jobs these days they typically end up having to take new jobs that do not pay as much. According to one recent study, the majority of unemployed Americans that have been able to find new jobs during this economic downturn have been forced to accept a cut in pay.

#8 The overwhelming majority of the jobs that the U.S. economy is creating now are low paying jobs. In fact, more than 40% of Americans who actually are employed are now working in service jobs, which are often very low paying.

#9 The number of long-term unemployed continues to skyrocket in this country. As 2007 began, there were just over 1 million Americans that had been unemployed for half a year or longer. Today, there are over 6 million Americans that have been unemployed for half a year or longer.

#10 For those who are out of work, the wait can be excruciating. It now takes the average unemployed American over 33 weeks to find a job.

#11 Millions of Americans have become extremely depressed as they have discovered that they simply cannot find any work at all. In August 2009, only 10 percent of the unemployed had been out of work for 2 years or longer. Today that number is up to 35 percent.

#12 Meanwhile, the gap between the wealthy and the poor continues to grow. According to one recent report, the wealthiest one percent of all U.S. households have an average of approximately $14 million in assets, while the average U.S. household has assets that total about $62,000.

#13 In fact, those at the very top of the income scale seem to be doing better than ever. Between 1950 and 1989, the top 1% usually earned around 7 or 8 percent of all national income. Today that figure is getting very close to 20 percent.

#14 Some of the income inequality statistics are almost too outrageous to believe. For example, the top 20 percent of U.S. working families take home approximately 47 percent of all income and earn about 10 times the amount that low-income working families bring in.

#15 Sadly, most American families are now living week to week. According to a survey released very close to the end of 2010, 55 percent of all Americans are now living paycheck to paycheck.

#16 The U.S. real estate market continues to stagnate. During the third quarter of 2010, 67 percent of all mortgages in Nevada were "underwater", 49 percent of all mortgages in Arizona were "underwater" and 46 percent of all mortgages in Florida were "underwater". So what happens if home prices go down even more?

#17 For millions upon millions of middle class families, their number one financial asset is their house. Unfortunately, many analysts are now projecting that U.S. housing prices will fall much lower than they are now. For example, Peter Schiff of Euro Pacific Capital says that home prices in the United States are going to decline at least 20 percent and possibly even more.

#18 But even though home prices have declined significantly, the truth is that they are still too high for most American families. Only the top 5 percent of U.S. households have earned enough additional income to match the rise in housing costs since 1975.

#19 Most American families have found that their economic situations have significantly deteriorated over the last several years. In fact, 55 percent of the U.S. labor force has “suffered a spell of unemployment, a cut in pay, a reduction in hours or have become involuntary part-time workers” since December 2007.

#20 As tens of millions of Americans barely scrape by, saving for retirement has become an afterthought. Today, 36 percent of Americans say that they don't contribute anything to retirement savings.

#21 The truth is that incomes all across America are going down. In 2009, total wages, median wages, and average wages all declined in the United States.

#22 So is anyone doing better? Well, one group is. In 2009, the only group that saw their household incomes increase was those making $180,000 or more.

#23 Most Americans are scratching and clawing and doing whatever they can to make a living these days. Half of all American workers now earn $505 or less per week.

#24 Millions of Americans have been forced to take part-time jobs because that is all that they could get. The number of Americans working part-time jobs "for economic reasons" is now the highest it has been in at least five decades.

#25 Some of the people that have been hit the hardest by all this have been children. According to one recent study, approximately 21 percent of all children in the United States are living below the poverty line in 2010 - the highest rate in 20 years.

#26 If all of the above was not bad enough, now we are not even living as long. According to one recent report, the United States has dropped to 49th place in the world in overall life expectancy.

#27 The sad truth is that our country is in decline and it is getting poorer. Ten years ago, the United States was ranked number one in average wealth per adult. In 2010, the United States has fallen to seventh.

#28 Our young people are supposed to be the hope of the future, but most of them are up to their eyeballs in student loan debt. Americans now owe more than $875 billion on student loans, which is more than the total amount that Americans owe on their credit cards.

#29 Life is getting harder and harder for those on the low end of the income scale. The bottom 40 percent of income earners in the United States now collectively own less than 1 percent of the nation’s wealth.

#30 On top of everything else, the price of oil is skyrocketing again. John Hofmeister, the former president of Shell Oil, believes that American consumers could be shelling out 5 dollars for a gallon of gas by 2012. If that actually happens, it is going to absolutely devastate millions of middle class American families.

So are you depressed yet?

Well, don't be. There is a whole lot more to life than just money.

Times are hard and they are going to get harder, but that doesn't mean that you can't thrive in the middle of all this. Hopefully we can all take this as a wake up call. We all need to work harder, become less wasteful, become more independent and stop living as if the good times are going to last forever.

So what do you think 2011 is going to hold for the U.S. economy? Please feel free to leave a comment with your opinion below....

It’ll Be Unstoppable, the Speed of It Will Leave Most People Waking Up to the Danger After It Has Already Happened

Well known investment adviser and forecaster Doug Casey of Casey Research recently joined International Speculator’s Louis James for an interview about the globe’s goings on. Mr. Casey discusses a variety of different topics, focusing first on the protests in Belarus and then shifting his thoughts to the coming financial and economic catastrophe that will engulf the majority of the world.

Yesterday we suggested that Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner has confirmed what some already know: We’re Literally On the Brink of Catastrophic Collapse. Doug Casey tends to agree with our sentiment and provides some of his views on why a complete collapse is unstoppable, what we can expect once it happens and steps to take to protect yourself:

Doug: You know I’ve been saying for years that the coming crash is going to be even worse than I think it’s going to be. The correction in 2008 was very scary, but minor by comparison. A warmup. Minor trembling in the ground, just before Krakatoa blows.

That the world financial system will have to face a reckoning day has been pretty much a given since the U.S. took the dollar, the world’s reserve currency, off the gold standard. Since then, decades of profligacy, not just in the U.S., but all around the world, have distorted the global economy to the breaking point. It’s only lasted as long as it has because of the great increases to productivity the computer and other wealth-creating technologies have created, and the fact that many individuals still produce more than they consume and save the difference – even as governments have stepped up their efforts at wealth confiscation.

I thought things might go over the edge in 1980, but I was early. I underestimated how much wealth there was left in the world for the politicians to plunder. But now, while there is more physical wealth in the world, in the form of factories, homes, powerful technologies, etc., there is also massively more debt. Governments – first-world governments, not just banana republics – are sliding towards default, and in the West most individuals have little or no savings. In the East, many have savings tied up in a deflating gargantuan real estate bubble.

For all the reasons we’ve discussed in many different ways, the Greater Depression we’re sliding into is going to be catastrophic for the old world order.

Uneconomic patterns of production and consumption are going to be liquidated – they have to be – and that’s going to smash a lot of people’s rice bowls. In today’s richest societies, people won’t be able to move back to the family farm the way they did in the 1930s; there’s no farm left in most families. There’s not even that much family left in many families – instead of extended families that care for their elders, who educate the young while the able-bodied adults work, we send our elderly to fade away in institutions and our young to be indoctrinated in other institutions, and we barely know what our brothers and sisters are doing, let alone our other relatives. What happens to the huge masses of such people when unemployment benefits can no longer be extended?

Yes, “It can happen here,” and it’s going to. Maybe not this year, maybe not for several, but when the real crash gets underway, it’ll be unstoppable, and it will destroy the status quo with a speed that will leave most people still waking up to the danger after the harm has already been done.

Louis: Sounds like a sci-fi horror film…

Doug: I know, and it’s unsettling to sound the alarm. People dismiss you for being a Chicken Little. But the plain truth is that we’ve already gone beyond the point of no return. There is simply no way the U.S. government can pay all its obligations without defaulting or destroying the dollar – which is just a different kind of default. The same goes for a lot of other governments. There is no way out that does not force a lot of people to make painful adjustments.

Louis: Are you talking blood in the streets or something more like a chapter 13 bankruptcy, where everything gets sold off to satisfy creditors? Do you see the world of Mad Max ahead, or are we all going to work for the Chinese?

Doug: Both could happen, but I’m leaning toward the latter. I think most of the world’s wealth will still exist, but it will change hands. Better start learning Mandarin. You’ll need it to do business in the new world after the crash – or to get a job as a houseboy, working for those who do learn to do business in the world after the crash.

Louis: How else do we prepare, besides learning Mandarin?

Doug: You know my mantra: liquidate, consolidate, speculate, and create. To which I add and must emphasize again: diversify your political risk. I truly believe that increasingly desperate states will be the greatest risk to your wealth, going forward. The swelling masses of have-nots are going to turn their increasingly hungry eyes on the haves, and the politicians are going to pander to them – and these days, if you have any net worth at all, you’re a have. When the food riots start in New York, LA, London, Paris, etc., I want to be good and far away.

Source: Lew Rockwell

If things keep going in the direction they are, with more people dropping off of unemployment insurance benefits monthly, tens of thousands consistently being added to food stamp rolls, and jobs permanently disappearing across the country, then it is only a matter of time before we have riots in the streets.

While the majority of Americans may not believe that it can happen here, one organization that is preparing a response for a cataclysmic meltdown is our very own US government, which is Actively War Gaming ‘Large Scale Economic Breakdown’ and ‘Civil Unrest’.

For those with the ability to do so, get out of the city. If it were up to Doug Casey, he’d suggest getting out of the country altogether. While this is likely not possible for most of our readers for a variety of reasons, there are most certainly things you can do to blunt the impact of financial, economic, political and societal calamity.

We continue to recommend that you diversify your available assets and get busy preppin’:

  • Get out of the city - the last place you want to be is in the middle of a food riot or dealing with a situation where martial law has been declared because of rampant crime or violence.
  • Store basic needs like food, water, toiletries in the event of a rapid spike in prices
  • If funds are available, you should consider investing in emergency preparedness goods as a hedge against rising prices. Some ideas: bulk wheat, rice, beans, and other foodstuffs.
  • Build up skills that may be useful during a severe depressionary environment. Office cube jobs will be few and far between. Learn to labor with your hands and produce physical goods or meaningful services. Be prepared to take work outside of your current training.
  • Contemplate a home defense and self defense plan. This may include acquiring some SHTF armaments and personal defense skills (e.g. martial arts, krav maga, etc.)
  • Have access to hard currency. In a hyperinflationary meltdown, things like food and ammo will become barterable goods, as will small denomination silver coins (e.g. junk silver pre-1965 half dollars and quarters).
  • Prepare yourself emotionally, spiritually and physically for unexpected occurrences. If the worst were to happen, no one would be spared.
  • Get informed. Read this web site regularly (shameless plug) and pick up some reading material online to give you an idea of the different scenarios that may play out. Some recommendations include Patriots by James Rawles, One Second After by William Forstchen, and preparedness guides like the Top 10 Survival Downloads You should Have (available free).

Prepare now - or pay the price later.

Surviving the Stress in our Modern World

use-visualization-to-reduce-stress

The term ‘modern survival’ can encompass many different topics such as being prepared for a disaster or becoming more self sufficient to name a few. Preparing, storing and becoming more in tune with the events around you are some of the things that come to mind when I hear ‘modern survival’.

Another meaning of ‘modern survival’ that comes to mind, is surviving the stress on a day to day basis in this modern world we live in, which is so different than the world our parents knew. Today in most households, both spouses have to work full time just to make ends meet. Long days at work, and long commutes make for exhausted people when they do get home. And due to the current recession, for many people, their work days have gotten even longer.

So many businesses have laid off workers to help cut costs and save money, but the ‘work’ has not necessarily gone away. Instead, many of us out there are left to ‘pick up the slack.’ We are EXPECTED to work longer hours to ensure the same amount of productivity, but with fewer workers. Many are afraid of losing their job if they don’t work the overtime. So, not only do we have longer work days plus our commute time, but many people are trying to deal with the added pressure of the stress we are under. This makes for a mentally exhausted, as well as, a physically exhausted person that eventually walks through the front door of their home sanctuary at the end of a day.
VISUALIZATION

Part of what helps me through some of my high level stressful days at work, is a little ‘visual’ technique, or ‘visualization‘. When I am in one of those stressful moments, I stop for a few seconds and I picture myself putting the key to my front door in the lock, turning it, and walking through the door. Closing the door behind me, I am in my sanctuary, where work can no longer ‘get me’. It stays outside. Our mini Dachshund, Sampson, greets me with such enthusiasm and kisses, once again, all is right with my world.

Another thing I visualize is my evening at home. What will I prepare for dinner? The meal I am about to prepare is going to be made with the rest of my family in mind. Even if I lived alone, the feeling would still be the same. The exercise of preparing my evening meal has taken on a ‘therapeutic’ ambiance. I think the key to remember here is I am now doing something for myself, not my employer!
When I first started gardening years ago, I first viewed it as a ‘labor of love’, or sometimes a ‘chore’ to be done. As our day to day worlds in corporate America got crazier and more stressful, I began to notice a change in how I viewed gardening and what tending my garden did for me.

When I came home from work, I would start tending our garden first. I began to notice the feeling of calm that came over me as I watered my plants. I came to look at them as my babies, since after all I started them from seed. It was amazing to me the subtle changes I could notice from one day to the next. Perhaps it was a whole new sprout or a new bloom.

The mindless tasks of watering and weeding began to erase the pressures of my day. Soon my mind was filled with thoughts of my babies. By the time I was finished and walked into the house, my thoughts were more like those of a proud parent than a stressed out employee. My babies were growing and would soon bear fruit of their own. Fruit (and vegetables) that would be so delicious on our table!
How you reduce stress is a personal thing and what you visualize is up to you.

Find what calms you and go there often!

Prepare: Cities and Sieges

Ever read any history? Ever read about sieges? Do you live in a city?
A huge amount of the world's population lives in cities and surrounding urban areas. Big cities like New York, Los Angeles, Tokyo, London, Paris, Mexico City and so on.
During times of war, a common tactic of invading armies is to lay siege to a city rather than directly invade and fight house to house. The city instead is surrounded, shelled and bombed from a distance and entry and exit from the city, for resupply, is blocked.
The residents of the city are thus bombed daily all while rapidly running out of supplies. Eventually, the city surrenders en masse.
There are hundreds of examples of famous sieges in history. For those who are preparing, consider what it would be like if your home town was surrounded and cut off from the outside world.
Stories of survivors of famous city sieges tell us of what they ate after the regular food stores were depleted. Pets, birds, rats, sawdust bread and in some cases, each other. Ugh.
If you live in a city, have you considered what would happen if supply lines dried up and whatever you had in the house and surrounding area would have to suffice? Is there a water supply nearby? Do you have something to catch rainwater with?
Do you have a supply of ready to eat food at home now? Can't cook during a siege or the someone unwelcome might drop by and help themselves to all you have after they smell your food.
Is there anything around you which can be eaten? Do you have a garden? Are you growing something in it now? Are there any wild and natural edibles in your area?
What about animals and wildlife for food? I have squirells, rabbits and other small game out the wazoo where I live. You can also catch small birds or plink them for food. But those sources won't last long.
Do you know where some food might be hidden and overlooked by other survivors?
I would hate to be in a large city during a siege or if resupply had been cutoff from the outside world. There is not enough food to go around, producing food is difficult and there are too many who will take what you have, if anything.
If you live in a large urban area, think about it.

Prophets Of Doom - Technology

it's not intelligent. It's still just a program. I heard a quote from one of the major IT companies recently saying it would take 30 years at the earliest to build a supercomputer on par with the human brain. There are far more imminent threats to be concerned about.

Funny how they are certain about intelligent robots... the same way they are certain about human caused global warming and human capacity of reversing it :-D
My first computer looks now like a pile of rubbish, and surely enough our present supercomputers will look funny in 20 years but it will take more time to make proper androids - much more time.

Bird Kill Explanation? Beebe, Arkansas

beebe-arkansas-bird-kill-possible-explanation

During 1-Jan-2011, thousands of birds (mostly blackbirds) mysteriously fell from the sky in Beebe, Arkansas.

Theories abound as to what may have caused the death of these birds, ranging from secret government Scalar weapons testing, to New Years fireworks, to Lightning.
Lightning
Local reporting indicates that there had been no lightning in the area for at least 10 hours.

Fireworks
Why would birds suddenly have a fireworks aversion on New Years Eve, 2011, while not having problems during 4th of July celebrations or any other previous year celebrations.

Secret Weapons
No doubt the government has top secret weapons in Research and Development and I suppose it is likely they have, or are, experimenting with electromagnetic scalar technology, but in Beebe, Arkansas?
A more plausible theory may have originated from a location 50 miles to the south, the Pine Bluff Chemical Agent Disposal Site.

The facility was established in November 1941 as the Chemical Warfare Arsenal where the U.S. Army stored approximately twelve percent of its original mustard nerve agent chemical weapons.

Disposal of the chemical weapons apparently began during 2005 and was completed during November of 2010, however “closure operations” and “toxic waste disposal” will continue for two more years.

Could it be possible that a toxic agent was accidentally released into a prevailing surface wind which coincidentally mixed with a flock of blackbirds miles away in the town of Beebe?

It seems possible, but is only one theory out of many that are floating around cyberspace today…

Major Cold, Snow to Strike USA

frigid-cold-blast-to-strike-usa

Forecasters are lining up in agreement that although it is Winter time, an exceptionally major and widespread disruptive period of cold and snow is about to descend upon nearly all of the U.S. beginning this weekend and extending into the foreseeable future.

The early part of the 2010-2011 winter in the U.S., until recently has had somewhat typical fluctuations of cold versus mild conditions varying from the East to the West while December has brought an increase in record cold in some regions.

The arctic blast due to descend from the North will capture the entire U.S. and may bring extraordinary cold and snow as far south as Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas, Mississippi, Georgia, and South Carolina.

Current snow cover across the U.S. blankets approximately half the country. During the upcoming few weeks, the snow cover could potentially extend to most of the country.

usa-snow-depth-map-4-jan-2011
Global temperatures tend to respond to the ocean temperatures. Six months after an El Nino (Pacific equatorial ocean temperatures above normal), temperatures elsewhere are warmer. Six months after a La Nina (Pacific equatorial ocean temperatures below normal), things start turning colder.

The present temperature of the Pacific ocean waters is in progress of a La Nina (a number of months in), and things are getting colder. There is a lag effect, and we are now evidently beginning to experience it. NOAA data currently predicts La Nina conditions through the summer of 2011.

la-nina-4-jan-2011
Young children who have yet to experience a “snow day” off from school, may get their first chance in the coming week or two.

Time to fill the furnace oil tank, get another cord of wood ready, dig out the extra blankets, find the ice scraper, store a shovel in the trunk, ready the sand – salt – grit, and brace yourself… it’s going to get cccold.

War games: 9/11 exercises offer too many coincidences

http://truthandshadows.wordpress.com/2010/12/22/war-games-911-exercises-offer-too-many-coincidences/
By: Craig McKee
Date: December 22, 2010
It was the first thing that made me suspicious.
At 8:21 a.m. on Sept. 11, 2001, it was clear that unknown parties had hijacked American Airlines Flight 11 from Boston to Los Angeles. Fighters were unable to intercept the plane before it crashed into the North Tower of the World Trade Center at 8:46. Seventeen minutes later, United Airlines Flight 175, also a Boston to Los Angeles run, hit the South Tower.
How could these planes reach their targets without encountering any opposition from the incredibly powerful and expensive U.S. military? Under normal circumstances, they couldn’t. But this day was anything but typical. In fact, nothing – from protocol to the laws of physics – operated as it should have on 9/11.
By the time the second tower had been hit, it was already known that American Airlines Flight 77 out of Washington D.C. had been hijacked. That flight, too, managed to fly around the northeast United States for more than 40 minutes before it allegedly flew into the Pentagon at 9:38 a.m.
Simply issuing orders to stand down would not have been enough to accomplish the “false flag” mission without the official story having even bigger holes in it than it does now. No, there had to be something going on that day that would provide a plausible excuse for the shocking failure of the military to protect New York City and Washington D.C.
And that something was war games. Several of them. Exercises that simulated planes being flown into buildings like the Pentagon and the World Trade Center. It happened on 9/11. Quite the coincidence, don’t you think?
Here are the main ones:

Amalgam Virgo (started in June 2001)

  • This exercise considered the possibility of an airliner being flown into the Capitol Building and into Tindall Air Force Base
  • It considered two hijacks happening at the same time

Vigilant Guardian (started Sept. 10, 2001)

  • Staged by NORAD and the Joint Chiefs of Staff
  • Simulated hijacked planes in the northeast U.S.
  • False inputs were placed on the radar screens of military controllers at the Northeast Air Defense Sector (NEADS)
  • Caused confusion about whether controllers were seeing real planes or false blips for the exercise

Global Guardian

  • Exercises (which included Vigilant Guardian) were usually held in October, but in 2001 were moved to early September. They went back to October the following year
  • Run by NORAD, in co-operation with Barksdale AFB in Louisiana and Offut AFB in Nebraska.

Northern Guardian

  • Involved sending six fighters and 70 people from Langley Air Force Base to Iceland.

Northern Vigilance

  • Moved fighters to bases in Canada and Alaska to monitor Russian exercises

Vigilant Warrior

  • A live hijack drill that simulated planes going in and out of radar
  • Co-ordinated by NORAD and the Joint Chiefs

National Reconnaissance Office drill

  • Conducted by a team from the CIA in which planes are accidentally flown into NRO headquarters in Washington D.C.
  • Emergency evacuation drill took people away from watching satellite feeds
  • Drill began at 8:45 a.m., just as the first tower was being hit

Tripod 2

  • This was a bio-warfare exercise for lower Manhattan, conducted by the City of New York and the Department of Justice at Pier 29, was to start on Sept. 12.

And there was more. Three F-16 fighters from Andrews AFB (just 15 miles from the Pentagon) had been sent 180 miles away for a training exercise in North Carolina. And the FBI hostage unit and all their equipment (including helicopters) were involved in a two-day exercise in Monterrey, California on 9/11.
It has been reported by Michael Ruppert and others that the war exercises were co-ordinated through Dick Cheney, although some dispute this. What we do know is that George W. Bush placed Cheney in control of domestic counterterrorism operations in May 2001.
It’s interesting that Cheney was in Washington that day, while the president was out of trouble in a classroom in Florida. It’s also interesting that before returning to Washington on 9/11, President Bush flew to the Barksdale and Offut bases – the same bases involved in Global Guardian.
The idea that all of these exercises and simulations were going on that day can’t be a coincidence. And the pattern was eerily repeated with the London bombings in 2005 when exercises were under way simulating bombings in three underground stations the same day as all three were bombed.
Some think the exercises were intended to cripple the response to 9/11 by confusing military controllers and other personnel. I believe this is true, but I also believe they were staged to create plausible excuses for the lack of response. But either way, there was a concerted effort to prevent any fighters from intercepting anything.

Time to Start Thinking About Alternative Transportation

Fuel prices is going to be a big story this year, as the video below explains. I’ve been a long time putterer, preferring to walk places because though time consuming I really enjoy it but I have wrecked my knees with 20+ years of 10 mile hikes on hard city sidewalks. In the cold weather [...]

The Preppers’ Problem with Nuclear Power

Guest post by Jack

This is to bring up the issue of Nuclear Power Plants. For the purposes of this discussion, I specifically talk about Florida, because that is the area that I know. Here is a link to a map with all the nuclear power plants in thepic: Nuclear Power Plant U.S., so you can make your own deductions about the area you live in:

There are currently three active power plants in Florida. They are in Crystal River, St. Lucie, and Miami. Crystal River is the closest to my location in Tampa at about 75 miles, St. Lucie is about 150 miles, and Miami is about 200 miles.

Now normally, there shouldn’t be much of a problem with nuclear power plants, because even if there is a small leak of radiation or radioactive material, it won’t last long, won’t spread far, and more than likely the wind is not blowing in my direction.

If there is an EMP (either nuclear or solar), all power plants will probably get a big EMP shock because of all the huge transmission lines leading into them. Nuclear power plants run on a type of ‘dead man’ switch, which means that supposedly if there is any kind of problem with the power plant (like all electronics get fried by EMP), the nuclear rods will automatically be extracted from the reactor via the use of non-electric gravity powered devices, stopping the nuclear reaction. Yeah!!!

Nuclear rods are radioactively and physically HOT!!!! The standard practice of nuclear power plants is to remove spent nuclear rods from the reactor and put them in radiation blocking casings and submerge them in large pools of water to keep them cool. The water is continuously refreshed and circulated to remove the heated water and bring in cool water. That’s why all the nuclear power plants are built right on the water (rivers, barrier islands, etc.) – easy access to plentiful water.

These nuclear rod cooling pools have diesel generator backups that will continuously keep the water refreshed in case the nuclear power plant goes down and can’t produce electricity. The generators have thousands of gallons of diesel stored, enough for several weeks run time, more than enough time for re-supply during normal times.

However…
  • 1) The nuclear rods are so hot that they have to stay in the cooling pools for years and even decades before they’ve cooled enough to transport to a permanent storage facility or be recycled. So most nuclear power plants have all their spent nuclear rods they’ve used for the past 20 years in the cooling pools on their property.
  • 2) The EMP might also fry the generators, especially if they have electronic controls and are connected to the grid.
  • 3) Even if the generators run, if there are no electronics left working after the EMP, how will computers (dead) order fuel from the refineries (dead), and trucks/trains (dead/dead) and ships (dead) bring diesel to re-supply them?
Consequences:
  • 1) If the warm water is not taken out and cool water brought in, the cooling pools will get hot and start boiling.
  • 2) Within 24-72 hours, the water will have boiled off and the casings holding in the radiation will start melting.
  • 3) When the casings are melted off, the rods will start burning the concrete and the earth and the buildings covering the pools. The buildings aren’t shielded, they’re basically just warehouses, so they’ll must be more fuel for the radioactive fire.
  • 4) The rods will burn for 3-6 months, spewing clouds of radiation far into the atmosphere, potentially reaching Tampa from all of the nuclear plants in Florida (maybe even some from Alabama & Georgia). Chernobyl sent radiation a thousand miles away into Europe and even today eating feral pigs is forbidden in some areas of Germany due to high radiation in the meat.
Remediation:

The solution to protecting from nuclear power plant radiation is the same as protection from nuclear weapons, except that nuclear weapons don’t keep going off for 3-6 months. Florida is a particular problem because there are no basements and the water table is too high in most places to shelter underground.

  • 1) Have a sailboat and head south for a Caribbean island that doesn’t have a power plant anywhere near it.
  • 2) Have a retreat on high ground and build a basement or underground bunker and stock it with enough food and water for 1+ years. Remember that a basement bunker has to have at least 18 inches of concrete over it, a house will not stop radiation.
  • 3) If you don’t have a basement, pick a room in your house or use the garage and build an interior bunker using 18 inch concrete blocks (filled with concrete) and a bunker roof (supported by 4x4s) covered by 18 inches of concrete blocks (filled with concrete), stocked with enough food and water for 1+ years.
  • 4) Take a shipping container and put it in a shallow hole above the water table (3-4 feet) and then cover the shipping container on the sides and roof with as much soil as possible or concrete blocks on the outside and logs over the top covered with soil (18 inches of concrete or 36 inches of soil is recommended to stop radiation).
Good news:
  • 1) A solar EMP will probably be less powerful the farther South you are, so Florida might be spared the worst. But even then, how long will the diesel last and what are they going to do with the nuclear rods?.
  • 2) Radiation does not usually affect ground water, so if you have a well, your water should be good as long as your water pump works.
  • 3) Within 6-12 months after the rods stop burning, most of the radiation will be greatly reduced. Just don’t dig or stir up any dust (for the next couple of decades), which will make gardening harder. So you might want to have lots of potting soil and fertilizer in your garage or barn to start your new container garden with.
  • 4) This may not sound like good news, but a lot of people will not survive the radiation so there shouldn’t be much competition for the remaining resources when you come out of the bunker.
Caution:

I am not a nuclear engineer, architect, or a nuclear medical specialist. I worry about radiation, but I don’t have any bunker – yet. I’m bringing this up for discussion because I’m worried about it, think others should be aware of the potential problems, and hoping others with more specialized knowledge might have more and better solutions. This is not legal, construction, or medical advice – do your own research and continue at your own risk.

*Notes:
  • All bunkers must have ventilation; overheating and humidity are the biggest problems with bunkers.
  • Solar panels are recommended. Store them in EMP proof containers. They are easy to install and you shouldn’t have to go outside to maintain them. Have enough solar panels w/batteries to keep several LED lights on in the bunker, power the ventilation fans several hours a day and run the water pump to your well.
  • For anyone who read the book ‘One Second After’ about the U.S. after an EMP attack, the author didn’t mention the multitude of nuclear power plants in and around North Carolina. But then the book would have been a lot shorter when everyone died after 3 weeks from radiation poisoning.
  • Make sure you keep the news about your bunker quiet! Don’t forget the Twilight Zone episode ‘The Shelter ‘ – every family should watch it together to emphasis the need for OPSEC about your preps.

Would love to hear your opinion in the comments below…

Failed Predictions Don't Stop Apocalypse Forecasters

January 03, 2011

If a group of fundamentalist Christians is right, you won't live more than another nine months.

Harold Camping, leader of the ministry Family Radio Worldwide, has concluded after careful study of the Bible that the world will begin to end on May 21, 2011. It will actually take several months for the process to be complete, but Camping is certain that by October it will all be over, and his group is doing their best to warn everyone.

The sect members are spreading their doomsday message using billboards, travelling caravans of RVs holding volunteers who pass out relevant pamphlets, and bus-stop benches, according to the Associated Press. "Cities from Bridgeport, Conn., to Little Rock, Ark., now have billboards with the ominous message, and mission groups are traveling through Latin America and Africa to spread the news outside the U.S," the AP reported.

Fundamentalist Christians have a long and colorful history of searching for — and mistakenly believing they have found — clues about when Jesus would return to earth and bring about the final judgment. In the early 1800s farmer William Miller concluded from a Bible study that the world would end April 23, 1843. It did not. [10 Failed Doomsday Predictions] - [Whoops! Failed Armageddon]

Magnitude 7.1 Quake, Back-to-Back, Chile, Argentina

2-jan-2010-araucania-chile-earthquake-magnitude-7.1
A powerful magnitude 7.1 earthquake shook the earth only 18 km east of the small town of 10,000, Tirua, located within Arauco Province in Chile.

The earthquake shook 17 km directly beneath a hilly region dotted with farms, although surely impacting Tirua, and other nearby towns Puren, Traiguen, Temuco, and Padre Las Casas. As this was a “shallow” earthquake, it likely produced lots of shaking on the surface compared to deeper quakes.

Of high interest is the location of today’s earthquake, which is only 40 km from the location of the largest earthquake of 2010, a magnitude 8.8 that shook the world during 27-Feb-2010.

Not only that, but just yesterday, a magnitude 7.0 shook Argentina, just 1,600 km to the northeast. Two magnitude 7 earthquakes back-to-back within 24 hours, is not something that happens very often.

The annual 100 year average is just 15 magnitude-7 earthquakes, while we’ve already received 2 during just the second day of the year.

The region is located on the edge of the Nazca tectonic plate, which itself is pressed against the Pacific plate, the ring of fire. Numerous volcanoes dot the boundary up and down the South American coast of Chile and Argentina.

Stay tuned and check back at MSB for updates as more data becomes available.
Update, Oddly, there has been only one aftershock so far (magnitude 5), more than 2 hours after the main event.

After more than 3 hours, only the 2nd apparent aftershock rumbled. I say “apparent” because this one shook a full 43 km away from the epicenter of the main event, rather than close by, like most aftershocks. Curious…

A reader reported, “You should note that Jupiter is conjoining Uranus (geocentric), the earth is close to the sun Jan 3rd, and there is a partial solar eclipse Jan 4th”. With that information, I ran my simulator, and sure enough – perfect alignment, as shown in the image just created…

10 Things To Do Now!

I’m sure most of you remember this post, it received 85 comments and generated a great buzz with readers. For those who don’t remember the post is essentially a shopping list of survival food and gear that you can find at any shopping center, such as Wal-Mart or Kmart.

Ten MORE Things To Do Now

As you might have guessed this post is a continuation of the post “10 Things to Do Now” post mentioned above. This one received an amazing 167 comments and was featured on Lewrockwell.com and linked to by a number of other sites.

100 Question Extravaganza

This one was huge with over 230 comments – by the time we had made it to the 100 question mark I felt like my head was going to explode, but it was a lot of fun and I feel like it helped a lot of people. I think we should start doing this once a month – what do you think.

How To Survive TEOTWAWKI In 14 Easy Steps

While this one did not get the same response from readers as the ones mentioned above, I think it is one of my better posts. The post details 14 suggestions to help you prepare for TEOTWAWKI (the end of the world as we know it) and I’m sure anyone following the steps listed will increase their survival rate after such an event.

Is Prepping Keeping You Poor?

One of the biggest frustrations expressed by readers is that they don’t have the money to prepare. As I’ve said before, you don’t have to be rich to prepare for disaster, you just have to plan smart.

Top 9 Mistakes Of Prepping Newbs

This post gives advice on nine of the most common mistakes that I see people making with their survival plans with tips on how to avoid them. I think it is ann essential post for those just starting out and it might even help some of you who have done this for a while.

6 Tips To Optimize Your Time For Prepping

After a lack of money, not having enough time is the second most common frustration expressed by readers here at The Survivalist Blog. This post gives advice on ways to get the most done with the least amount of time.

5 Tips to Get Your spouse On-Board for Your Preparedness Journey

Unfortunately, for many, the spouse isn’t supportive of our emergency preparedness efforts. I’ll never forget the reader who emailed me after her husband hauled her preps to the dump. If you are having trouble convincing your spouse that being prepared is a good this, this post could help.

Finding Like-Minded Survivalist Friends

This is another area where we tend to have a lot of frustrations, we feel like we are alone in our prepping. That is the reason, I wrote this post and started the survival meet up page. I hope it helps you find someone or even a group of friends.

5 Reasons You Might Fail As A Survivalist

The title of this says it all. I loved writing this post because it made me dig deep into my own mistakes and failures while prepping. We all make mistakes, even me but if we learn from those mistakes can they be considered failures? I don’t think so.

Top 10 Smart Ways to Build Your Food Storage

Need I say more.

What Do You Do When You’re Given The Deadline For Teotwawki?

This post gives advice on using a technique commonly refered to as mind mapping to find holes in your survival preps. This is one of my favorite posts, one because I think it has the potential to help a lot of people and two because it caused a lot of debate both on and off the blog that lead to the next post…

TEOTWAWKI: Vote Yes or No This Week Only

This post asked the simple question “what is the meaning of TEOTWAWKI” does it have to be a total Mad Max type of event or can it be a disaster on a smaller scale such as an economic collapse. With over 140 comments the response was overwhelming and clear.

Planning For New Arrivals Post-TEOTWAWKI

This post asks the question, “what would you do if unwanted visitors come to your door looking for a handout post collapse? Will you turn them away? Or will you pull the trigger if they refuse to leave?” Be sure to read the comments on this one.

There are many other posts that could have been included here but these are the ones that popped into my mind this morning. I hope you find this list useful as we go into the New Year.

What was your favorite post in 2010?

Campi Flegrei : The supervolcano that threatens all life in Europe

January 01, 2011

Two thousand years ago Mount Vesuvius destroyed Pompeii. Today, a larger, far more deadly supervolcano lurks on the other side of Naples. If it erupts, Campi Flegrei could wipe out all life in Europe. So why are British scientists battling the Italians for the right to poke at it with drilling rods?

Campi Flegrei super volcano caldera

The Campi Flegrei caldera is a supervolcano. While a new eruption here would be more likely to result in the creation of another Vesuvius-like cone, the worst-case scenario could see it obliterating much of life in Europe

NAPLES, ITALY, THE NEAR FUTURE

It begins with a swarm of 1,000 small earthquakes that ripple under the pavements of Naples. Air-conditioning units fall from the sides of buildings and tiles slip from the walls. Inside the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology’s control centre, a bank of screens indicates that the quakes aren’t being generated by the giant Mount Vesuvius, which looms over the city.

These quakes are coming from something far bigger, from one of the largest and most dangerous volcanoes in the world: the Campi Flegrei caldera. Vesuvius, which destroyed the Roman city of Pompeii, incinerating and suffocating thousands, is nothing more than a pimple on the back of the sleeping dragon of Campi Flegrei, an active four-mile-wide sunken volcano. A call is quickly put through to Civil Defence and the Italian Ministry of the Interior: the city must be evacuated immediately.

A short distance away, the ground around the ancient town of Pozzuoli is stretching, swelling, doming. Fumaroles – vents emitting columns of steam rich in CO2 – open up in the broken Tarmac. Four-and-a-half miles below the surface a bolt of magma has escaped the main reservoir and is rising upwards, changing and solidifying. As it reaches groundwater, it’s converted into a sponge-like stone. As the water boils away it feeds critical amounts of gas into the sponge, and the pressure builds until finally it explodes like a malfunctioning boiler.

Hundreds of billions of cubic feet of volcanic rock blasts up into the atmosphere: an explosion 200 times greater than that of the Icelandic Eyjafjallaj√∂kull volcano, which brought chaos to Europe, grounded planes in the UK for a week and is said to have cost the world economy in excess of £3 billion.

Back on the streets of Naples, it’s too late to run. Bumper-to-bumper traffic comes to a halt as drivers grind on their horns. They watch helplessly as a boiling black cloud of hot gas and rock rolls over the horizon at hurricane speed, suffocating everything in its path. In this area inhabited by millions, built in one of the most dangerous volcanic regions on earth, all life is over.

Italy map

The Campi Flegrei caldera is a supervolcano. Although there’s no picture-postcard volcanic cone, hidden beneath the seemingly placid landscape lies a volcano of immense power. While a new eruption here would be more likely to result in the creation of another Vesuvius-like cone, the worst-case scenario could see it obliterating much of life in Europe.

In this eventuality the Earth’s surface would swell and crack and a series of small eruptions would cause the four-mile-wide caldera floor to collapse into the larger magma reservoir, which would in turn push more magma to the surface.

The last time the ground gave way like this, 39,000 years ago when the caldera was formed, it created the cliffs that the postcard town of Sorrento stands on now – volcanic deposits over 300ft deep. If the same kind of eruption happened today, this part of Italy could cease to exist, and the ash clouds would blot out the Sun and lower the Earth’s temperature. Life in the UK as we know it would end. We would lose our livestock, crops and three-quarters of our plant species, plunging us into a new dark age of rioting, starvation and perpetual winter.

Now an international team, including scientists from the UK, wants to drill down inside the caldera to try to better understand exactly why part of it has risen 10ft since 1969. The area at the epicentre of the swelling has seen whole streets of houses crumble and collapse. The threat is imminent. The last time the ground rose like this (between 1430 and 1538) there was an eruption that caused the formation of a new volcano.

Geophysicist Renato Somma at an abandoned building destroyed by sulphurous deposits from the caldera

Geophysicist Renato Somma at an abandoned building destroyed by sulphurous deposits from the caldera

Key to the operation is British volcanologist Chris Kilburn, from University College London, who lived in Naples for 20 years. He’s part of a long tradition of UK volcanology, which stretches back to the grand tour of the 18th century, when Sir William Hamilton provided some of the first scientific observations of Vesuvius. The UCL group are now world leaders in rock physics – especially in understanding how the Earth’s crust deforms and breaks – which makes Kilburn a vital member of the drilling team.

‘Right now we may well be in another period of uplift,’ he says. ‘If it occurs as before, we might expect another 60 years’ worth of unrest, and possible earthquakes and eruptions, with two or three more episodes and uplift to occur in the next ten years. We have to presume we have a few more decades of unrest, and if this is going to be the case, then we have to get more data about the volcano now.’

Kilburn and the other scientists’ work may well be crucial if the people of Naples – and the rest of Europe – are to avoid another Pompeii scenario. Yet despite the urgency, the mayor of Naples has just dramatically halted the project. Drilling was to begin this month on the site of the old Bagnoli steel mill, on the eastern part of the caldera, but was stopped following the very public objections of a sole local scientist, who has warned that the drilling itself could actually trigger an explosion that could destroy the city.

The people of Naples seem to be damned if they do and damned if they don’t, but is it really possible that one simple drill hole could cause an eruption that could end life as we know it in Europe?

Pisciarelli, near Pozzuoli – the centre of the caldera

Renato Somma, of the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology in Naples, pushes the Fiat through the gears as we wind our way through the grounds of a hotel and health club built on the side of the Solfatara crater. Once fashionable, the hotel was used by U.S. Naval officers until a rise in the ground of 6ft led to an earthquake that damaged the base, and saw the U.S. Navy relocate 20 miles away from Naples.

The road runs out, and Somma stops the car beside an abandoned earthquake-damaged building. To our right the hill continues upwards. To our left is a five-a-side football pitch and the valley below. The only curious thing is the colossal plume of steam energetically billowing upwards from behind the pitch. We walk alongside the ground and duck under a loose section of wire fence, watching the steam as it swirls in the wind.

The area where scientists want to drill towards the magma

The area where scientists want to drill towards the magma

Suddenly the Tarmac ends and yellow and white volcanic stone cracks underfoot like stale bread. A few steps further and we hit a wall of sulphur, which rolls over us in invisible waves, collecting in our throats and turning our stomachs.

Where once there was green hillside there’s now an atrophic scar of sponge-like volcanic rock. At the lowest point of the scar gurgles an inhospitable pool of boiling muddy water, where bubbles of gas rise to the surface and pop like blisters. Somewhere below, magma and water are meeting and making CO2, which filters through the sponge and prevents any kind of plant or animal life from living here.

I tell Somma I’m disappointed there’s no lava: you see a volcano, you want lava – it’s like a Martini without the olive. He laughs.

‘This is even more dangerous than the lava flow,’ he says. ‘Below here we have a risk of hydromagmatic eruption – when the magma and water meet you have a more explosive pressure than with magma alone.
